Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder characterised by significant impairment in social interactions and communication (including language delays), in addition to restriction in patterns of behaviour, interests and activities, and usually cognitive impairment. Often individuals with autism have an intense need for sameness and will become distressed if change – no matter how small – is introduced. Another frequent observation of individuals with autism is their tendency to engage in stereotyped, ritualistic behaviours, such as spinning in circles or waving their hands in front of their eyes. Autism is thought to be on a continuum of severity, whereby sufferers are rated in relation to their ability to ‘function’. Asperger’s Syndrome is believed to be on the high functioning end of the Autism spectrum. It shares with Autism impairments to social functioning and restricted/unusual behaviours or activities. Sensory sensitivity – particularly to sounds – is also common. Often clumsiness and poor coordination is observed in individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome, however it does not include the language delays seen with Autism. In addition, individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome rarely show severe cognitive deficits and usually have IQs within the average range. Treatment of ASD using neurofeedback is a highly individualised process. A qEEG is imperative in order to pinpoint excesses and deficits of brain activity. Common symptoms to be alleviated by neurofeedback are psychomotor and mental agitation, lack of social awareness and repetitive behaviours. It is highly likely that dietary changes and nutritional supplementation will also be required to address the problems associated with ASD.
