frequently asked questions

I want to start Neurofeedback, what is the process?

The first step of the assessment process is to make contact with the Centre to arrange an initial consultation.  A comprehensive form will be sent to be completed and sent back prior to that initial appointment. This form contains information very important to the assessment process and will be discussed at the initial consultation and clarified as necessary. A detailed explanation of qEEG and neurofeedback will be given, and any questions answered. Depending on the problem, other assessment techniques (such as Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA), or a behavioural questionnaire) may be required, and these will also be discussed during the initial consultation. Nutritional needs may also be discussed.

Following the initial consultation, an assessment will be carried out via qEEG (quantitative electroencephalography). This assessment is integral to the process, as it gives the practitioner valuable information about the trainee’s brain activity and is essential to the development of accurate protocols for Neurofeedback. Any other tests required will also take place at the assessment appointment.

Results from these assessments, and any nutritional tests having been done, will be discussed at the follow-up consultation, and a plan will be set in place to begin treatment.

What costs are involved?

The cost of treatment is highly individualised and depends entirely on problems needing to be addressed, types of assessments required, length of treatment, etc. Costs of relevant individual components will be discussed at the initial consultation. Neurofeedback training and nutritional treatment are not ‘quick fixes’, nor are they ‘cheap’ ones. However, payments are made session-by-session, rather than in an up-front lump sum. Overall the treatment package for correcting irregularities in brainwaves with neurofeedback and nutrition is less expensive than having an incorrect bite corrected with braces. Like having teeth fixed, neurofeedback is a worthwhile investment into your – or your child’s – future.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?

In most cases, gains made during Neurofeedback training are permanent. Occasionally, a future ‘top-up’ treatment may be required.

HOW LONG ARE THE SESSIONS?

Each training session runs for around 50 minutes.

HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NEEDED?

Sessions ideally take place from one to five times per week. Depending on the problem and its severity, 30 or more sessions may be required. Usually results can be seen from around the 10th session. Assessments are generally repeated after the 20th session to evaluate progress.

How long is THE  waiting list?

In most cases we can schedule an initial consultation within two to three weeks. Appointments for assessments can be tentatively made at the same time, and rescheduled at the initial consultation if required.

HOW ARE INITIAL CONSULTATIONS ORGANISED?

Please contact the Centre by phoning (02) 9499 7101 or emailing info@sydney-neurofeedback.com.au

ARE ANY OF THE ASSESSMENTS OR TRAINING SESSIONS CLAIMABLE?

Unfortunately QEEG and Neurofeedback are not currently claimable through Medicare or most private health funds.
However you may wish to check with your accountant about your eligibility for claiming a tax deduction under health expenses.
